Synthesis of the evaluation report of the Sterinis® process for the disinfection of units of care at Purpan univeristy hospital (Toulouse/France)
By Pr. Nicole MARTY, bacteriology and hygiene laboratory of the Toulouse's Rangueil CHU, President of the Toulouse's hospitals CLIN, Hygiene section responsible of the French Microbiology Society
The objective of the evaluation is to prove that the disinfection of volumes and surfaces by the technique of the dry mist of the Sterinis® process is effective in the sick rooms infected, within particularly risky units of care of the Toulouse's hospitals (France).
Two services which are regularly checked were indicated: Reanimation of the Toulouse's Rangueil CHU and Infectious diseases of the CHU of Purpan. These sites were selected because they can receive nosocomial infected patients carriers of MRSA and Acinetobacter baumanii (having caused a at the end of 2003 epidemic in France).
This evaluation carried out according to a protocol from January to September 2004 and according to procedures of quality of the hospital. It is based on 36 series from 6 to 8 samples of surfaces distributed in the environment of the patient making it possible to measure the effectiveness of the Sterinis® process by comparison "before/after" the process and the identification of the eradicated germs.

This evaluation makes possible to highlight that the Sterinis® process:
-
allows to reach a reduction in a factor 10 to 200 of the bacterial total flora found in the environment of the patient
-
allows to eradicate the pathogens in the environment of the patient
-
has an action on surfaces easily accessible as on the zones more difficult to reach by the usual techniques (technical rail, drawer reserves medical devices, etc).
« The whole of this report thus validates the effectiveness of the Sterinis® process in term of decontamination of the rooms of the infected patients. »
« This process must thus contribute to the fight against the nosocomial infections by transmission of pathogens between patients via the hospital environment. »
